If you’re not preselling, you’re losing money
The number one strategy to increase your affiliate sales is preselling.
Before we start, let’s talk about what preselling actually is. There are two components to it – art & science. The goal is to get your reader prepped to make a purchase. Then sending them to the product sales page to make the purchase. And if it’s done properly, the process is completely sub-conscious.
In a nutshell, you provide value. And give them a link to the product you’re preselling. In a second we’ll talk about how to do actually it. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Some major benefits of this process:
- Preselling creates trust – Once you have your readers’ trust, they will click your links more readily. And the more traffic you can send to the sale page, the more commissions you’ll earn.
- Preselling is disarming – When you’re preselling vs. pitching, you’re reader doesn’t feel the need to be guarded. And in turn they read to understand what you’re saying. And your intention is conveyed more easily.
- It preps them to buy – Now they trust you and feel open to your message. So they become more receptive to other messages. For example, the sales message on the page you’re linking to. Being open to a sales message is what it means being in a buying mood.
- It increases your sales – Now your reader arrives at the sales page in a buying mood. With a feeling of trust and openness. The only thing that can result is increased sales!
- Your customers are happier – People like to make their own buying decisions. Instead of feeling pressured or “sold”. And this leads to greater satisfaction with the product.
- Your profits go up – Satisfied customers are less like to refund. Which means you keep more of your affiliate commissions.
The need to presell is clear. You increase your profits. And produce happier customers. It’s a win-win-win!
OK, so how do you do it?
Now you know whey preselling is critical. So, hopefully you’ve decided to start preselling. So, let’s talk about how to make it work. Like we talked about before, it’s an art. And it’s a science.
Becoming an artist
The first step is in getting your readers to trust you and open up. And the only method of doing this is to give exceptional value to your readers. Now, providing enough info to be useful, but still making them want more – that’s the art of it. That is, they have to be wanting more when you refer them to the product sales page for the product you’re trying to sell. And since they’re more open, they are more likely to make a purchase.
The science component
There’s also a specific formula you need to follow.
One of these key elements is the presentation of the information. You have to have your end in mind. Your end goal is to make a sale of the product you’re preselling. How can providing information accomplish this goal? First, you can provide useful but incomplete information. The second way is to provide all the information and let your reader discover how hard it is to actually implement it. Either way, the product sales page solves the problem.
You also have to link to the product you’re promoting discretely. Instead, you use a direct link to the product website. That’s because nobody likes to click on affiliate links. But how are you going to get credit for the sale, if you don’t include your affiliate link? This is all part of the science of preselling. You use an image tag to cookie your reader before they leave your site.
Next, you want to make sure you’re linking on related words and phrases. It’s habitual to click on words and phrases that are hyperlinked. And if the words you hyperlink relate, your reader will naturally click them for more information.
What you have now is a super powerful system for affiliate marketing success.
OK, here’s the not-so-good news:
It’s extremely difficult to do this correctly. Think about everything that goes into crafting an effective preselling article: Great content. First and foremost, you have to be able to write a great article that provides valuable information. To do that you have to have enough information to be valuable and be able to present it in a useful way. Writing to presell. First, you have to give good information. You also have to present the info in a way that provides real value. While at the same time making them want more. Or provide so much information that they see how hard it will be to implement.
Choosing your products. You also need to determine what products you’ll be preselling. Even if you can pull off writing and great article. You’ve wasted all your effort if the product doesn’t sell well.
Techy stuff. And finally, you need the technical know-how to embed your image tag and make sure you get credit for the sale. This is actually pretty simple – just embed a 1 pixel X 1 pixel image and set your affiliate link as the “source” of the image. (But if you mess it up, your referrals won’t be tracked.)
