Choosing Upholstery Cleaners Can Be Stressful
Posted by Joanne Anderson at Oct 23rd, 2009 in Home Business
Of all the decisions in a persons life, deciding on upholstery cleaners is probably pretty close to the bottom of the list. But it takes some time and research to make these decisions in an educated manner. Unfortunately most people just go to the store and pick up a can that says “Upholstery Cleaner” and think that is the end of it.
Now the decisions start. What kind of upholstery is covering the couch or chair? Do I want to just do a rush job and sprinkle a little powder on it, rub it in a little, and then vacuum it off. Maybe I’ll go a bit further and use a foam that I spray on, brush in, let dry, and then vacuum off. After all, that seems pretty simple and easy.
You have products that pre-treat stains – such as ink or grease. You have products that remove coffee, tea, and soda. You can remove dye, rust, gum, adhesives, oil, food, and blood. Each of these takes a different chemical or combination of chemicals to remove. And don’t forget those nasty pet stains.
Then I discover I have leather patches on my furniture. That calls for a whole different set of products. Leather cleaning is totally different from cloth. If you use the wrong cleaner you can ruin the leather with spots, cracks, and stains. I don’t want to do that. Leather furniture is expensive. So I have decide on products for both types of upholstery cleaning.
You have odor removers for cooking odors, smoke odors, and pet odors. Some are pre-treatments and some are in the cleaners themselves. You decide which way you want to do it, before you clean or while in the process. Which way is best for how much time, effort, and money you are willing to spend.
You have special products for leather upholstery. Leather has special properties that have to be addressed when being cleaned. It also has to be treated after it has been cleaned to help protect it until the next cleaning. If you use normal upholstery cleaners on leather you can ruin it with spots, stains, and cracks that are caused by the reaction of leather to some chemicals.
Now you are ready to choose how much effort and money you are willing to put into this chore. Do you want to just sprinkle some powder on, lightly rub it in, and vacuum it off. Or do you want to go a little farther and use a foam that you spray on, brush in, let dry, and then vacuum. Maybe you want to go all out and rent a machine that that safely applies a combination of chemicals in a steaming manner that has results similar to dry cleaning.
You can invest as little or as much as you want in effort, products, and money to clean your upholstery. You decide which products you feel comfortable with and which ones do the job to suit you. There are many to choose from with good results from many years of being used. Just be sure you use them properly so as to keep your home safe for you and your family. After all, the whole reason for cleaning the upholstery is so you and your family can sit on it and enjoy it.
