The Fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization

by Thomas Gillen

Search engine optimization is by far the best investment you can make in your website. It delivers long-lasting results and highly valuable traffic, which is the goal of any webmaster.

Within search engine optimization, the field can be broken down in to two parts. The first is on-page SEO, which is all of the content on the website itself. The next, equally important part is off-page SEO, and that comprises mainly of link building and promotion.

Link building can be quite difficult, but it should be put off until the content of a site is developed thoroughly. Content should be built around targeting specific keywords, or phrases that you want your site to rank for on search engines. It is necessary to place those keywords strategically throughout your site’s pages.

It is critical that the correct keywords be chosen, or else the site will garner very little traffic. Through proper keyword research, which involves finding out the search volume and competition of keywords, the best keyphrases can be decided upon and targeted.

A fair amount of content should be put up on to a website before launch, and throughout its lifetime more content will be added. However, this is only part of the task of promoting a website. The more time consuming part is building links to your website, which directly increases rankings.

The methods for creating links are numerous and creative. Some techniques include article distribution, blog commenting, and link baiting. The latter requires no work other than having good content on your site, which people would naturally want to link to.

If it seems that your efforts are not getting any results, you can consider hiring an SEO business. Don’t do this lightly, as it can cost a lot of money that might be better spent on some kind of link building activity, but sometimes the investment can really pay off.

It can take a few months or even over a year, but once you have achieved a good ranking, it is hard to lose it. SEO is more rewarding than any other promotion technique and should be pursued by all serious webmasters.
